Women in Tech Hampshire - Launch Event 2024
24 Jan, 202410 MinutesWe recently hosted our first ever Women in Tech Hampshire (WiTH) Launch event, which proved to be an outstanding success! With a turnout of over 50 attendees, the evening unfolded as a blend of networking, enlightening discussions, and a shared commitment to fostering diversity in the tech sector.
The event begun with some networking (and snacks of course) providing attendees with the opportunity to connect with other likeminded professionals. At the event, we welcomed those from graduate, up to C-suite level, gleaning insights that could enhance their roles and provide valuable takeaways to improve and diversify their hiring processes.
Once networking was completed, and new connections were made, we moved on to the panel discussion part of the evening. Introducing our fantastic speakers:
Jess Pomfret, Database Platform Architect at Data Masterminds
Samantha Kingston, CEO at Virtual Umbrella
Tamsin Minton, Service Delivery Manager & Head of UK WIT at NetApp
Following introductions, each shared their career journeys and experiences in the tech industry. Some of whom, had unexpected paths into tech, including a theatre stage hand and a football enthusiast, alongside the traditional routes.
The panel discussion also explored topics beyond personal journeys, delving into the importance of sparking interest in computer science, technology, and STEM subjects among younger children, particularly girls. It was clear that early action is crucial, with the acknowledgment that showcasing strong female role models could positively influence girls' and women's interest in tech. The evening highlighted the passion and willingness of the WiTH community to drive change where needed.
While the discussions could have easily continued long into the night, the evening concluded with a final networking session, allowing attendees to connect with the speakers and fellow peers. The enthusiasm and engagement witnessed during the event were truly inspiring, with many expressing interest in becoming future speakers and eagerly anticipating the next event.
The overwhelming turnout, engagement, and positive feedback received has fuelled our excitement for the future of Women in Tech Hampshire. We are anticipating multiple meetups throughout the year, covering a diverse range of topics.
